Homage to the 20th…
With this issue, ArtOnCuba is arriving at its 20th edition, although as is known, it actually is the 21st, given that its first edition was named with the figure 0.
In any case, with this edition the all-time records have been broken for published Cuban art magazines, none of which have surpassed, or even reached, that figure.
In all fairness, it’s necessary to start by giving thanks for this to Hugo Cancio, that Cuban who has endeavored to show to the world Cuban culture in its most varied expressions. An effort that, in this particular case, deserves all the respect and recognition of the Cuban art world in and outside the island.
At the same time, we want to extend to our collaborators from here and over there, the sincerest gratitude for the unconditional support they have given this project, notwithstanding the inconveniences of diverse type we have faced throughout these years.
Representing all of them, we have chosen the figure of Aldo Menéndez, who recently turned 70 and has not stopped struggling for the development of all-time Cuban art and in any place in which his compatriots live.
We also wish to send the most heartfelt greeting to those who formed part of this magazine’s founding team, Tahimi Arboleya, Deborah de la Paz and Hai Fajardo who, for several years, gave life to this project.
Together with Victor Cabrera, our star designer, and Maylin Cancio, the most patient of the management team, also founders of the magazine, I also extend our sincerest thanks to all the artists, art critics and historians, national and foreign, who have accompanied us until today in this adventure, and which Mercedes Guillot has also joined to take to English the not always easiest Spanish of our writers.
Lastly, with this issue we have wanted to advance the homages that Havana will receive next year for the anniversary of its foundation, in thehope that the so-called “capital of all Cubans” receives next year all the compatriots who wish to recall the history of that which one day was the capital of the “Key to the new world and the Anteroom of the West Indies.”
